Government wants everyone to benefit from home ownership - News
30/08/2006 - A Conservative Government would make sure all council tenants have the right to buy
David Cameron announced his plan to create a revolution in home ownership by allowing all council house tenants the right to convert rental payments into mortgage payments. Under the proposals, unemployed people would be able to use housing benifit to build up equity on their homes. The policy would be open to all council and housing association properties.
The head of housing charity Shelter, Graeme Brown was not enthusiastic about the proposal and felt that the idea would only "exacerbate the nightmare of bad housing for thousands of families suffering at the sharp end of the housing crisis" Peter Tutton fo Citizens Advice, said that some people who had previously taken up their right to buy had then found themselves homeless as they were unable to make their repayments. Michael Gove, the shadow housing manager said that it would be vital to replenish social housing as homes were sold out of the system and that councils should be able to use some of the revenue for building new homes to expand the supply.
